I originally wrote this guide, believe it or not, for school, as we had to write instructions for something for English. It's aproximately 4200 words, by the way :-P
The quest itself is available to both sides, but it starts a bit differently. I have it described as the horde way, but for alliance, you can go to, Nethergarde Keep I think it is, the Alliance fortress in Blasted Lands and get a quest that will send you off to the Fallen Hero of the HOrde. Transportation is described for the Horde side too: you're not taking a wind rider from Grom'grol on your Night Elf, but you should be able to find your way to the areas with the alliance versions of the flight paths.
By the way, you should be level 58 at least. And have friends level 60 or so who will be willing to help you at the end. It's best if all of you start and work through the quest at the same time, because getting a friend caught up on a 22 part quest just isn't very practical.
I hope this helps all who use it. I don't mind if you use it somewhere else: just give me credit, mention my gameamp account name, or my character name: Galivice, and my alt-quickly-becoming-my-main Soulstream, on Magtheridon US Horde Side.
First, travel to the Blasted Lands. The easiest way to reach the Blasted Lands is to take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar or the Undercity. Wait for the zeppelin to Grom’grol base camp. The upper zeppelin in Tirisfal Glades overseen by Hin Denburg and the northern zeppelin in Durotar, overseen by Snurk Bucksquick lead to Grom’grol. From Grom’grol, if possible, take the wind rider to Stonard. If you do not have the flight path, you must walk there. Follow the small path northeast from Grom’grol to the main road, then follow that north through Stranglethorn Vale and out into Duskwood. Follow the road north in Duskwood. Soon, it will fork east and west. Take the east path east and north to Darkshire. Instead of continuing straight north through Darkshire, instead leave by the east exit, following the road east past the Beggar’s Haunt tower and to Deadwind Pass. Follow the road, taking Deadman’s Crossing over Sleeping Gorge. Be careful you do not fall in, as it is an instant death and annoying to get back out. Continue along the road to the southeast into the Swamp of Sorrows. Once in the Swamp of Sorrows, follow the road north, and follow it as it turns east. At Splinterspear Junction, choose the southeast path and follow it. When the road splits off again to the south and east, follow it east to Stonard. In Stonard, visit the flight master to get the flight paths, repair any damage you might have taken to your armour and weapons over the course of your trip, and buy food and drink if you want to. Then, head back west out of Stonard, along the road, and this time when the path splits head south to the Blasted Lands.
Standing off to the left of the road, right at the border between the Swamp of Sorrows and the Blasted Lands is the Fallen Hero of the Horde. He is a ghostly male orc dressed in armour. Speak to him, and he will give you a quest, bidding you to listen to his story. Hear him out, and the quest line will continue to “The Disgraced One”. The Fallen Hero was sent to the Blasted Lands leading an expedition. He was to wait for further orders from Dispatch Commander Ruag in Stonard, but instead, he led his expedition into the Blasted Lands without waiting for them. They were not ready for the powerful demons of the Blasted Lands and all met their demise. Now he stands, waiting for the orders. He asks it of you to get those orders for him, from Dispatch Commander Ruag in Stonard. Travel back along the road to Stonard. In the main building, in the tower, is Dispatch Commander Ruag. Talk to him and continue the quest line. He explains to you that he relayed the orders, but the party of soldiers that he sent the orders with was ambushed and slaughtered by murlocs. Bengor, the only soldier to survive the ambush, can no longer walk and can barely speak. He is being taken care of in Stonard.
Bengor is lying on the floor in the inn. When you talk to him, he manages to tell you that the orders were taken from him by a murloc named Swamp Talker and taken east, into a cave, then passes out. The cave he speaks of, Stagalbog Cave, is to the east of Stonard. Travel east, and when you reach the Pool of Tears, follow it shore until you reach its southernmost point, and head south from there until you reach the cave.
The cave and the area around it are infested by murlocs. Marsh Inkspewers, Flesheaters, and Oracles mill about in the cave. The Inkspewers, level 42-43, can use Ink Spray, reducing your chance to hit by 50% for 15 seconds, but are not very strong. The Flesheaters, level 43-44, have no abilities but will become enraged at low health, increasing their attack speed and damage done. The Oracles, level 44-45, can cast Lightning Bolt, dealing nature damage, Lightning Shield, giving all who attack them a chance to take nature damage, and Healing Wave, healing themselves or an ally for about 650. Watch for them to turn away, their hands glowing green, showing that they are casting Healing Wave. Then use a silence or stun effect to interrupt their casting. Take any path, as they all lead to the back of the cave, then travel up onto the ledge there. There is Swamp Talker, a level 50 black murloc. He is not particularly strong, but if you take too long on the fight he will summon a Swamp Spirit, a level 40 elemental who will aid him in battle. However, these only last until you hit them. You might want to clear the area around him of enemies, or when he runs away at low health you might find yourself fighting 3 extra murlocs. Slay him, and recover the orders from his corpse. Then return to the Fallen Hero of the Horde.
The Fallen Hero of the Horde will then give you the quest “The Stones That Bind Us”. He tells you to travel to the Blasted Lands, and free the members of his expedition who have been enslaved by demons. You must free 3 Servants of Grol, 3 Servants of Sevine, 3 Servants of Allistarj, and 9 Servants of Razelikh. Go south, entering the Blasted Lands.
Once you enter the Blasted Lands, travel directly west along the mountains to Dreadmaul Hold. It is a fortress, with a small wall and a watchtower outside, and guarded by Dreadmaul Ogres (level 45-46), Dreadmaul Ogre Mages (46-47) and Dreadmaul Brutes (level 47-48). The Ogres and Brutes have no abilities at all, but the Ogre Mages can cast Bloodlust, increasing their own or their ally’s attack speed temporarily, and fireball, hurling a ball of fire for about 250 fire damage. Go through the gate, then start moving counter-clockwise around the Hold. Beside 3 catapults it he first Stone of Binding, floating in the air. Just north of it is the Servant of Grol, standing and mining. He is a troll, wielding a huge mace, with above-average health and damage for a mob his level. Make sure you pull the servant to and fight him beside his Stone of Binding, or else he will become invincible. When he is almost dead, he will become misty-green and ethereal, and you can then destroy his Stone of Binding. Continue counter-clockwise around the hold, and on the other side is another Stone of Binding and the servant it controls, beside another 3 catapults. Free him too, then leave the hold. Travel south and a bit east, to Dreadmaul post. There, the final Servant of Grol is, guarded by Dreadmaul Maulers (level 53-54) and Dreadmaul Warlocks (level 54-55). The Maulers can only cast Curse of the Dreadmaul, reducing your melee attack power by a measly 20 for a minute, but can take a lot of damage and deal a fair bit too. The Warlocks can take very little damage, but can cast shadowbolt dealing about 300 damage each time! Fight your way to the Servant, who is in the back, wandering in and out of the cave. Free him too, then travel west, to the Altar of Storms and the Servants of Sevine.
The Altar of Storms and the Servants of Sevine are guarded by many Shadowsworn Warlocks (level 52-53), Enforcers (level 52-53), and Dreadweavers (level 53-54). The Warlocks are weak casters that almost never cast, summoning a Voidwalker to aid them, but the Enforcers are tough, warrior-like mobs with a lot of health, big swords, and the ability to Cleave, cutting the air in front of them, dealing damage to all enemies who stand there. The Dreadweavers are fragile casters, but can and will cast Shadowbolt dealing around 300 shadow damage each time. The first Servant of Sevine is in a small camp, at the base of the path to the Altar of Storms. He is level 55 or 56, and surrounded by Shadowsworn. Clear your way to him, and fight him. He is a stronger version of the Servants of Grol, and must be killed in the same way: by destroying his Stone of Binding. The next servant is halfway up the path to the Altar of Storms, and the final one is just beside the altar itself. Free them too, and move on.
Across the Blasted Lands from the Altar of Storms is the Serpent’s Coil, Archmage Allistarj’s lair, and where his servants can be found. It is a cave, guarded by many Shadowsworn Cultists (level 51-52), Thugs (level 52-53), and Adepts (level 53-54). The Cultists attack quickly, and are able to poison you, dealing 36 nature damage every 3 seconds for half a minute. They can also stand back and throw knives at you, so you might have to run up to them to fight. The Thugs attack very quickly, using fist weapons, and can kick you, silencing you and interrupting casting, and snap kick you, knocking you down for 2 seconds. The Adepts are fragile casters, who know only two spells: Blood Leech, and Dark Mending. Blood Leech steals a small amount of health from you, healing the Adept for twice the amount stolen and is used often. Dark Mending is almost never used, but can heal an injured ally for a huge amount. The Servants of Allistarj are level 54-55, but unlike the others, use a 1-handed sword and a shield, so they deal less damage but can take more. The first Servant of Allistarj can be found right in front of the Serpent’s Coil. Kill the Shadowsworn around the campfire beside him, then free him. Like the others, he will turn ethereal when about to die, and then his Stone of Binding can be destroyed. Travel south, past a ruined building and tower, to a small camp of Shadowsworn. The second Servant of Allistarj is just east of them. Kill the Shadowsworn, and travel further south to the next camp. This camp is slightly larger, with a bonfire, hammock, a table and benches, and some racks of weapons, guarded by 4 Shadowsworn, with the final Servant of Allistarj in the center. Kill off the Shadowsworn one by one. You might need to wait for the right moment in order to pull only one at a time. When they are all dead, free the final Servant of Allistarj.
Just south of there is a huge crater, with the Dark Portal at the bottom of it. Around the lip of the crater are the Servants of Razelikh, all level 57. Teams of Felguard Sentries (level 54) and Felhounds (also level 54) patrol the area. Carefully pick off the patrols (their paths intersect so make sure you only fight one patrol at once), then free the servants. Make sure you do not fall into the crater, as it is infested with extremely powerful demons. Travel around the crater, and after freeing all 9 of them, return to the Fallen Hero of the Horde.
Speak to the Fallen Hero of the Horde, and the quest will continue to “Heroes of Old”. You must speak to Corporal Thund Splithoof, a ghostly Tauren who appears next to you. Corporal Splithoof will then tell you to open the lockbox that appears at his feet. Inside, you can find the Shard of Afrasa, a trinket that when equipped will increase your mana and health regeneration by 5.
After that, he will give you a quest: Kirith. He tells of how one of his men is still unaccounted for: Lieutenant Kirith. Kirith the Damned can be found within the Serpent’s Coil, where you found the Servants of Allistarj previously. Allistarj’s experiments have warped him into a massive, powerful ghostly Felhound. He is a powerful enemy, level 55 elite. If you manage to free his spirit, he will thank you, giving you the quest The Cover of Darkness. He tells you of how each of the demon lord Razelikh’s underlings: Archmage Allistarj, Grol the Destroyer, and Lady Sevine, wear an amulet. These amulets protect the owner, giving them immortality and invulnerability. When you return to the Fallen Hero of the Horde with this information, he will tell you to speak to Loramus Thalipedes, a demon hunter who resides in Azshara.
Return to Orgrimmar. If possible, fly to Valormok in Azshara. If not, leave Orgrimmar by the western exit to the Barrens. Travel along the mountains, past the Boulderlode Mine and the Sludge Fen until you come to the road. Travel north along the road to Ashenvale. When the road turns east and west in Ashenvale, travel east. When it forks off yet again, it does not matter which way you travel, either way will get you to your destination. Follow the road east through Azshara, until you reach the Bay of Storms. Swim through the waters to a large island in the southern part of the bay. The waters are dangerous and infested with Sea Giants. Level 53-54 elite Servants of Arkkoroc and level 54-55 elite Sons of Arkkoroc wanders the waters. However, they are easy to spot and easy to avoid.
On the island are a small cave, Loramus Thalipedes, and his 3 Felhunter guardians. Speak to him to continue the quest line. He will tell you a story to which you must listen, then wait for him to perform a ritual to grant him information about the forging of weapons of great power. From the ritual he determines that the only way to harm Razelikh and his minions is with a weapon of great power, forged bearing his true name. He sends you off to the Sea Giant, Lord Arkkoroc.
Lord Arkkoroc can be found in the Temple of Arkkoran, in the very northeast part of the Bay of Storms. Swim back to shore, and run along the shoreline north and east. The southern part of the shore, ruined High Elven building-littered Southridge Beach is the home to Spitelash Myrmidons (level 50-51) and Spitelash Sirens (level 51-52). The Myrmidons are warrior-like, with a lot of health and high melee damage. They can cast Spitelash, dealing a small amount of shadow damage and temporarily increasing your damage taken by around 50. The Sirens are fragile hunter-like mobs, with a ranged attack. They can also cast Frost Nova, freezing you in place, Renew, healing them over time, and Frost Shot, shooting a frosty arrow at you, dealing about 100 frost damage and decreasing your movement speed to 40% of normal for 10 seconds. It is your choice whether you fight through them or run past them, as they are easy to avoid fighting.
Continue north through the Shattered Strand. The beach will soon end and you will be forced to swim along the cliffs. The waters you swim in are home to Coralshell Lurkers (level 53-54), Wavethrashers (level 52-53), Storm Bay Warriors (51-52), and Makrinni Scrabblers (52-53). The Coralshell Lurkers are peaceful turtles and do not need to be worried about. The Wavethrashers are hydras and will attack you on sight, but thankfully cannot do anything special. The Storm Bay Warriors are murlocs and have no special abilities, and the Makrinni Scrabblers are Makura, also ability-devoid.
It is a large temple, of High Elven architecture, surrounded by Makura and murloc. If possible, sneak into the temple’s top floor and speak to him. However, you may need to fight your way to him. The Temple and the area around it house Arkorran Oracles (level 54-55), Arkorran Muckdwellers (level 53-54), Arkorran Pincers (54-55) and Arkorran Clackers (53-54). The Oracles are white murloc casters, able to cast healing wave, healing themselves or an ally for about 850, and lightning shield, dealing 110 damage to a melee attacker (3 charges). Watch for him to turn away, with his hands glowing green, then interrupt his casting. The Arkorran Muckdwellers are orange-coloured murlocs. They are able to give you the disease Fevered Fatigue, decreasing your intellect and spirit by 11 for half an hour. The Arkorran Pincers and Clackers are both big, heavy Makura, but the Pincers have the ability to use rend, giving you a bleed effect dealing 28-29 physical damage every 3 seconds for 15 seconds.
He tells you to slay the powerful hydra Hetaera. She can be found in the Clutch, in the waters to the east and a bit south of the Temple of Arkorran. She is a very powerful level 55 elite. You will need another to help you, or very good gear and items and the use of all of your long cooldowns. Though her max health is relatively low, she hits for about 350-450 damage, enough to kill anyone pretty quickly. Slay her and bring back her heads to Lord Arkkoroc. He will squeeze the blood from them, and you must bring it back to Loramus Thalipedes. It is to be used to temper the weapon you will forge.
Loramus will then tell you to collect Azsharite, or mountain giant excrement, from the nearby cliffs. The cliffs are the home of many level 53-55 elite mountain giants: Cliff Walkers, Cliff Breakers, and Cliff Thunderers. They all have huge amounts of health and armour, and deal around 300 damage per hit! The Cliff Breakers can cast Cripple, decreasing your movement speed, attack speed, and strength by 50% for 15 seconds. The Cliff Thunderers can use Thunderclap, decreasing the movement speed and attack speed of all enemies around him to 26% and 70% of normal, respectively. He will give you a Felhound Tracker kit to aid you. Inside is a Fel Orb, which can be used to summon a Felhound. You must use /roar at the Felhound, who will then run to the nearest Azsharite vein. However, it completely disregards the enemies around it so you must run fast and avoid the giants around you. You could also try to find the veins manually but it is much easier to have the Felhound lead you to them, or to have a hunter help you, using Track Giants so you can avoid the giants and still get the crystals. Or, you could just get the help of enough people so you can easily just slice your way through the giants. Once you have collected 20 pieces of Crystallized Azsharite, return to Loramus.
He will give you a quest called The Formation of Felbane. You are to deliver a shipment to Galvan the Ancient, leader of the Mithril Order, in Stranglethorn Vale. Travel all the way back to Stranglethorn Vale. Galvan can be found in the mountains just south of Zul’Gurub, in the Northeast. He will craft you a weapon to combat Razelikh and his minions: an Enchanted Azsharite Felbane Dagger, Staff, or Sword. On them are etched Razelikh’s true name: Rakh’likh. They also grant you increased attack power against demons. You must then return to the Fallen Hero of the Horde.
The Fallen Hero of the Horde will tell you to kill and collect the amulets of Grol the Destroyer, Archmage Allistarj, and Lady Sevine. Lady Sevine can be found at the top of the Altar of Storms where her servants were found. Grol the Destroyer can be found in the middle of Dreadmaul Hold where his servants were found. Finally, Archmage Allistarj is in the back of the Serpent’s Coil cave, where his servants were found. You will need at least 3 others to help you kill them. You must use your Enchanted Azsharite Felbane weapon or they will not die. If you use it at the start of the fights, they become considerably easier but it takes away a lot of the fun. All 3 of them are level 58 elites.
Allistarj is a mage (which is why he’s called Archmage Allistarj… I’m so helpful :-D). He can fireball for a lot of damage and survive a fair bit too. He can cast amplify damage, doubling the damage you take temporarily. Even his normal attack does a lot of damage, even though he’s a caster. If you use your Enchanted Azsharite Felbane weapon at the start of the fight, he will become very weak, unable to cast, and easy to kill but if you use it only at the end when they would normally become invincible the fight becomes challenging and fun. It’s up to you which one to do. Either way, it is vital that you interrupt his casting whenever possible.
Grol the Destroyer is a fairly powerful ogre warlord. He can hit you for a huge amount of damage and absorb even more. His resistance to magic is very strong and it reduces the damage from many schools of magic by a lot, if not to 0. Make sure your tank and healer are skilled. You can choose to use the Enchanted Azsharite Felbane weapon at the beginning or at the end. When you use it, he will shrink, and his attack power will greatly decrease. Again, at the end is challenging and fun, at the start is quick easy and boring.
Lady Sevine is a fun fight. Every 15 seconds or so, she summons a level 55 Infernal. The Infernals on their own are very difficult for their level. Try to ignore the Infernals, focusing on killing her, then if after she dies, you cannot handle the remaining Infernals, run away, as the Infernals will not disappear when she dies. However, the Infernals have a fire shield effect and a pile of fire shields dealing damage to you can kill you quite quickly. Once again, you can choose whether to use your Enchanted Azsharite Felbane weapon at the beginning or at the end of the fight. As before, at the end makes if much more challenging and fun but at the beginning makes it a lot easier.
Finally, with all 3 amulets, the Fallen Hero of the Horde gives you the Ward of the Defiler and the quest “You are Rakh’likh, Demon”. You must kill Razelikh, and take his broken horn from his body. Gather a party. You will need a tank, healer, melee dps or an offtank, and some ranged dps.
Razelikh the Defiler looks like a Dreadlord. He attacks quickly dealing high amounts of damage (about 1200 a hit, without armour reduction) and is immune to most types of magic. You need to watch out for his Strong Cleave ability, which cuts through the air in front of him, dealing his normal attack damage+55 and slowing the attack speed of all hit by it by 25% for 10 seconds. This is used very often, especially early in the fight. He can also mana burn, destroying about 700 mana and dealing half that much damage to a target. The fight takes place on the Rise of the Defiler, a small mesa, high above the Blasted Lands. On the south side of the mesa, a small drop down, is a platform about half the size of the mesa, with a rune of return on it, to teleport you safely to the ground. Your tank should immediately pull him down to that platform, with his back to the cliff. Ranged DPS and healing should stay up on the mesa. At about 65%, Razelikh will yell “Let the flames of chaos engulf you!” blasting nearby enemies backward into the air, and letting them float slowly to the ground. If your back is not to the cliff, you will get thrown off the Rise of the Defiler, putting you out of the fight for good. However, if your back is to the cliff, you will just get blasted up, then float back down to him. At about 50% health, he will yell “Come, Ilifar! Your master calls!” and summon Ilifar, Keeper of Souls. Ilifar looks like Baron Rivendare, and hits for about 500 damage (without armour reduction) and can cast Shadowbolt, dealing about 450 shadow damage. Your melee dps/offtank and ranged dps should focus on killing him (he dies quickly but is a pain when left alive), with your main tank and healer still concentrating on Razelikh. At about 20-25% health, he will become enraged, increasing his attack speed and he will yell “Face my champion, mortals!” and summon Felcular, a relatively low health Felguard who deals about 350 damage a hit. Again, your melee dps/offtank and ranged dps should focus on killing the add, then return to fighting Razelikh.
When Razelikh has fallen, recover the Horn of the Defiler from his body. Use the rune of return to go safely down to the ground, and return to the Fallen Hero of the Horde, victorious! You will receive a Necklace of Sanctuary, a +10 shadow and fire resistance necklace, Demon’s Blood, a +3 defense and health regeneration, +10 shadow resistance trinket, and Demon Hide Sack, a 16-slot bag with a cool icon.
