My first WoW guide, don't be too harsh :)
World of Warcraft is a game where players share their environment. As so, it is very easy to accidentally annoy someone or do something incredibly rude. Though many will already know all of this, I think it is important for new players to find out before they have a mob of hate-mailers on their heels :) Plus, if you keep taking things you shouldn't, you tend to arrive on a lot of Ignore lists, which means less party invites.
0.5: Definitions:
Ninja: Stealing something of someone else's
Roll: Type "/roll 100" (without the "" of course). Whoever gets highest wins the item.
1: Mining, Skinning and Herbalism
The three gathering professions are a massive source of ninjaing, whether in a group or not. If you are in a group with more than one of these, then if in a high beast area try and work out some sort of a rota (and roll on rare/high level beasts). For Mining and Herbalism, either do this or, more commonly, roll for each individual vein. If you are not in a group, also be aware. Don't skin someone else's kill while they are healing/finishing the other mob attacking them. Ask, wait for them to finish, and if they either run off ignoring the corpses or tell you you can, then you can start skinning. When mining for Herbalisming (Gotta be a better word than that), if you are simply following someone else's trail of corpses and have done nothing yourself you should really let them take the ore/vein/herb, if they want it. I mean, they did all the work. If you are both killing everything in sight toward it, though, either get them to roll for it or it's every player for itself!
2: Treasure
Treasure chests, clams, and that whole family. If solo, follow the solo rules for gathering above, but in a group, DON'T just run for it! Do a roll, if you get highest Then you may open, followed by the 2nd highest if they wish to have your remains, etc. When with locked boxes, usually a rogue will pick the lock and you will roll, although some people insist this should be rogues only, with all the rogues rolling for the unlocking and treasure.
3: Need or Greed?
I remember when i first partied with someone to help a newbie me kill Lady Sanareth, I remember wondering what that strange box was when a green item dropped. The person was nice enough to explain it to me, but it still may confuse some who have not read newbie guides. This is the need or greed box. The dice are Need, the coins Greed. If you need an item - it has better armor than your current and you can wear, it is a great weapon for your class, etc, then you click need. If not, you click greed. If you do not want, click the little x to close the window. If you are in a loot master mode and are loot master, not asking all the rares for yourself, that's just mean.
You do NOT, I repeat NOT, unless no-one else wants it and the party agrees you can have it, need in these situations:
- Disenchanting: I don't CARE if you need your enchanting level needs up, this thing still vendors/auctions for money. Good luck getting a team who will let the enchanters roll for everything they don't want by the way.
- Money: Look, don't even ask about this, that is greed. Greed it now, it is the same money to you as it is to everyone else.
- Lockboxes: Rogues can unlock them, but some people may have a rogue alt, or pay to get it unlocked (or get a free unlocker). Feel free to offer your services, but everyone else has the same right to this as Rogues.
- I COULD use it...: If you are never going to use it, even if you can, let someone else have it.
4: Bluewalling
In the PVE/RP realms, Bluewalling refers to attack a PVP mode player without activating your own first, thus getting a free shot in. Some may say this is fully within your rights, and that they chose to get in PVP mode. Unless the enemy player has your own faction alts, though, many would wonder what harm it does, but I thought I should include it here anyway.
Thats all I can think of, but I'm sure whatever I missed will be pointed out (repeatedly) in comments :)
