Have you had trouble logging in, lately? Have you been stuck waiting in the line for hours to get on "your" server? The official World of Warcraft Community forums are rampant with shrieks and rants about it. For the last week or so Blizzard has been running "tests" to try to fix their server-load problems. With an unconfirmed subscribtion base of over 300,000 (yes, that's THREE hundred thousand!) it's no wonder Blizzard is running into problems. There are ISP's who can only wish to have that many subscribers.
But, Blizzard has a plan. They are planning on holding distribution on retail copies of the game. This is in order to stablize the number of subscriptions until Blizzard can fix cure what ails the servers for World of Warcraft. It should be noted that Blizzard reps have stated that they are not asking retailers to pull what copies they have off the shelves.
Some moderate (and not-so moderate) personalities in gaming mass-media have commented on the server congestion problems over the past few days. Run on over to GU comics and Penny Arcade to see what they have to say.
